NUDIST BEACH IN SYDNEY
Sydney has a number of nudist beaches which are frequented by a diverse crowd. Most of these beaches are not signposted so you may stumble across them without warning. My recommendations are of the beaches I have discovered and appear to be the most frequented.
WHY AND WHAT ARE THE RULES?
Baring all can give a real sense of freedom. For those who have lain nude in the sun or swum naked in the ocean know what I mean. Some people benefit from a sense of appreciation that bodies come in all shapes and sizes. Often at these beaches is a community of naturists who enjoy the feeling of just being themselves with no inhibitions. They tend to be a friendly bunch who welcome newcomers.
If visiting nudist beaches for the first time there are a few things to keep in mind. Mostly this is common sense and obvious respect. Some basic ‘do not’ rules include no photos, no getting sexual and no coming just to stare. It is always up to you about how naked you want to get. Be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and shade. And finally, enjoy your naked freedom!
WASHAWAY BEACH
This has to be my favourite nudist beach in Sydney! Not because it is a nude beach but because it is just a great beach in general. It has white sand and crisp clear water. The novelty of this beach is that it is only there when the tide is out. So be sure to plan around that if you intend to visit. Getting here is a little bit of an adventure with a walk from any of the entry points into Dobroyd Head or Grotto Point. It is not well sign posted so google maps might be helpful to ensure you head down the right track. There is a little scramble downhill just before you get to the beach. Then getting onto the beach from the cliff top takes a little care so it is a good idea to watch someone else get up or down so you can see how it is done. I found a variety of people at this beach including families with children, nudist men, and woman as well as boats anchored off shore. This beach is a real treasure and a ‘must do’ whether you are looking for a nude beach or not.
LADY BAY BEACH
This beach is on the way out to South Head near Watson Bay. The easiest way to get to Watson Bay is to drive or by catching a ferry from Circular Quay. From Watson Bay, it is about a 15-minute walk to Lady Bay Beach. The walkway that passes the beach is very popular so this is definitely not a secluded or hidden spot. Many people wander by. Taking a stroll all the way out to South Head and the lighthouse is also worth it just for the views. You could easily spend a whole day enjoying the sunshine and landscape and there are some great places to eat back in Watson Bay.
OBELISK BEACH
This is the only nudist beach in Sydney I came across that was signposted. It is located on the south side of Middle Head, about 100 meters down a track from the road. The view from the beach looks out into the Sydney Harbour and is frequented mostly by locals. This beach is known as a gay-friendly beach. If you are in this area you might also be interested in checking out the old forts located out on Middle Head. It is totally worth a stroll around the area.
LITTLE CONGWONGS BEACH
I discovered this beach in late April and it was the busiest of all the nude beaches I have come across. Again there was no sign or warning. A great little beach that looks out into Botany Bay. It is an easy 10-15 minute walk from the La Perouse car park and bus stop. Walk down the hill and along Congwongs Beach. At the other end, there is a trail that will lead on to Little Congwongs Beach. Pick a spot along the shoreline, spread out your towel and enjoy!
