The Papamoa Hills Regional Park (Te Rae o Papamoa) is one of my absolute favourite places to visit when I am home in the Bay of Plenty. The park is full of walking trails and amazing views on 135 hectares with the highest point at 224 metres. The shortest route to the top would take most people 30-45 minutes. However, you could spend a good few hours exploring the different paths around the park.
On a clear day you can scan the coastline all the way up to the Coromandel and down to the East Coast. Looking out towards the ocean you will spot a variety of islands including to the North, Mayor Island (Tuhua) and to the East, Whale Island (Moutuhorā) and White Island (Whakaari).
THE HISTORY OF THE PAPAMOA HILLS
These hills were first occupied by Māori as early as 1650AD. This is clear by the number of pā sites scattered around the area. These are still very prominent today and can be recognised by the terracing of the land. It is said there are over 200 archaeological features to be found here.
Early in the 20th century the McNaughton family began farming here. Then about 20 years ago they sold the farm to be developed into the Regional Park it is today. You can learn more about the history and culture of this region here.
THE PAPAMOA HILLS TRAILS
In the car park, at the end of Poplar Lane, you will find the start of the main trail. This track is quite steep but it is wide and very well maintained. Along the way you will come across lookouts, seats to rest and signs showing you other trails you can take. About half way up you can head into farmland by taking the route that leads around the ocean side of the hills. This takes a little longer but is a really great option if you have the time.
You might spot some farm animals and if you are lucky you may even see some wild turkeys! There are tables and benches scattered all through the park so plenty of places to stop, rest and enjoy the view. Getting up here for a sunrise or sunset is really something special. Just be sure to have a torch with you if you are planning to catch the sunset and that you make it out of the car park before it closes.
