EXPLORE THE HAWKES BAY REGION, NEW ZEALAND

The Hawke’s Bay is one of New Zealand’s warmest, driest regions making it perfect for producing fabulous red wines.  This region is also notable for its Art Deco architecture, award-winning food and magnificent landscapes.  Farmers’ markets are popular for locally grown produce and gourmet delicacies so you can be sure to find a treat.  Much of the region was rebuilt in the 1930’s after a huge earthquake making it quite different from any other region in New Zealand.  

MAHIA

MahiaMahia, in the Hawkes Bay, is a place worth exploring. If you head up the windy Kinikini Road you will find this lookout and the Mahia Peninsula Scenic Reserve. There is an awesome loop track in the reserve. The track takes you through one of the best examples of semi coastal forest on the North Islands East Coast. Tawa and kohekohe forest is varied with stands of nikau, rimu and rewarewa. There is a picturesque stream here which makes a great spot for a picnic. Mahia is popular in the summer with plenty to do including golf, hiking, fishing and surfing. This place is also well known for the Rocket Lab which is the world’s first private orbital launch range. Pretty cool huh!

ROUTE 52

Have you ever driven Route 52? Its a former state highway that runs from Waipukurau in the Central Hawkes Bay, to Masterton in the Wairarapa. It passes through some interesting little farm settlements. The highway goes to the coastline at Porangahau and then continues on through Weber, Waione, Pongaroa, and Tiraumea before heading west to Alfredton and lastly Masterton. The route is not just for cars but it is also a cycle trail. Graded intermediate this 200km adventure is recommended to do over two days. Whatever your wheels this is a great alternative route to take if you are travelling between the Wairarapa and the Hawkes Bay.A
